In 2009, Tim Bennett wanted to compost. Unfortunately, he was living in a second story South Philly apartment and wasn’t sure how to get started. Our compost is made from a blend of food scraps, wood chips and leaves - all sourced from our residential and commercial clients here in Philadelphia. After transforming completely using aerated piles, your kitchen scraps are ready for the garden!
Shop our high quality, locally made soil products and get free delivery on all bagged products in Philadelphia! Collection customers receive 20% off all bagged soil products. • When you enter our online shop to purchase, enter your address so we can let you know when you can expect your order in real time. If you are a weekly compost pickup customer, please login to your CUSTOMER PORTAL to place your order. If you do not log into your customer portal, you will not receive your 20% customer discount.
If you are outside of Philadelphia where we do not offer delivery options, you can you still purchase our products in person at 5650 Rising Sun Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19120. Drop by anytime Monday through Friday between 8am and 4pm.
Made, mixed and packaged at our headquarters in Philadelphia, our potting mix is a living soil! Our blend ensures proper drainage and includes benefits of the microbial activity of both our compost and vermicompost. No additives needed, this soil is ready to plant in as is. Great for use in window boxes, container gardening, indoor and outdoor pots and seed starting.

Rice hulls (or husks) are used to add porosity to soil. Add them to a potting mix that needs better drainage or use them to make your own custom soil blend. Also try them out as a mulch on your garden bed! Available in 1 and 5 gallon sizes.

Our compost is made from all locally sourced material - mainly Philadelphia's household food scraps! The use of compost creates a healthier soil - leading to healthier plants. It promotes better drainage, holds air and water more efficiently and encourages larger population of beneficial soil microorganisms. For use on outdoor plants only.

Our vermicompost is made by our hardworking team of worms. It has all the benefits of our compost and more! It provides a nutrient reserve for plants and is stable enough to use on both indoor and outdoor plants. It is a great,non-chemical general multivitamin for your soil!
A little bit goes a long way with our vermicompost. Add a half of a cup minimum (up to 30% of soil volume) directly to your plants each growing season to help refresh the soil.

In 2009, Tim Bennett wanted to compost. Unfortunately, he was living in a second story South Philly apartment and wasn’t sure how to get started. After talking with some friends at dinner about it, he realized he wasn’t alone. It was a light bulb moment. He put $100 in a bank account and Bennett Compost was born.
Since then our team and process has continued to evolve. Currently, Bennett Compost picks up from over 5,000 households and businesses every week, keeping over 70 tons of material out of the landfill every month.
In 2018, Jennifer Mastalerz joined Tim as an owner of the business. An architect by training, Jen had been composting since 2010. She first got her hands dirty composting with Philly Compost and then went on to start her own bike-powered composting business in Fishtown.
