Support Individuals, Families, and Communities

Impact Services works to empower people with the skills and resources needed to reach their highest potential.

Since 1974: We have been working in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia to help people reenter the workforce train for jobs, find housing, and build community. Over the last two decades we have also built a continuum of housing services in an effort to end veteran homelessness.

Collective Impact: The foundation of our work lies in our ability to nurture partnerships with other mindful organizations. By aligning missions, resources, and creativity – we’re able to muster the latent energy in our community.

Veterans Services: Impact provides housing for over 200 formerly homeless veterans and for veteran families. Impact uses a “housing first” model to ensure that veterans in need get assistance putting themselves on a path to self-sufficiency.

Community & Economic Development: Impact works with the community to facilitate a broad range of activities including, vacant lot stabilization, repurposing vacant buildings, planning social events, and fostering collective action toward common goals. We also invest in social enterprises and small businesses through the Impact Loan Fund.

Employment & Training: Impact’s workforce development programs will place over 2,000 people into jobs this year, creating stability for individuals and families. We also help people sign up for benefits through BenePhilly, and help inmates and returning offenders get the identity documents they need to apply for employment.

Free GED, ESL, and introductory computer classes provide community access to additional skill-improving opportunities.<br><br>Reclaiming abandoned industrial sites has been a complementary element of Impact’s work in a community that lost 90% of the jobs provided by a once vibrant textile economy. Economic Development efforts have reclaimed three former industrial sites and converted them to new uses including office and classroom space, a childcare center, computer labs, housing, and a range of successful job creation projects. A defunct YWCA has also been reclaimed to become 46 units of veterans’ rental housing. With a staff of 147, Impact itself is a focal point of local job creation.<br><br>Many accomplishments have become springboards for new work.<br><br>Early Veterans Services led to significant work in Supportive Housing for homeless veterans, and a new frontier, serving veterans challenged with a Dual Diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse.<br><br>Broader Community Development efforts have been bolstered in recent years by comprehensive community planning that addresses not only Housing, but a comprehensive set of strategies to reclaim the Heart of Kensington neighborhood.</blockquote>
