The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger gives the following descriptive information:

Real people. Real hunger. Real help.

Our Mission: Founded in 1996, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger strives to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. The Coalition connects people with food assistance programs and nutrition education; provides resources to a network of food pantries; and educates the public and policymakers about responsible solutions that prevent people from going hungry.

Our programs address a spectrum of needs in Pennsylvania. We:

  • Help Families Put Nutritious Food on the Table: Every year, the Coalition assists more than 5,000 people with SNAP (food stamps) through our convenient SNAP Hotline. Qualifying families receive help applying for SNAP and can also be connected to free school meals, summer meals for kids, and other resources that allow them to make ends meet.
  • Strengthen the Safety Net that Keeps Millions from Going Hungry: Nearly 1 in 7 Americans rely on SNAP, our nation's most effective program in fighting hunger. School meals, WIC and other federal nutrition programs are also part of this essential safety net. The Coalition works with government officials to strengthen these programs, which help people afford the food they need.
  • Support Communities Fighting Hunger in their Backyard: The Coalition supports many food pantries and soup kitchens in the Philadelphia region, providing them with funding, kitchen equipment, volunteers, workshops and other tools. In 2013, the Coalition also launched two "Green Light Pantries" in Philadelphia, a new kind of food pantry that provides only nutritious foods to clients as well as free nutrition classes, health screenings and other services.
