Building Women Leaders

Founded in 1921, Miss Philadelphia is an institution in the City of Brotherly Love. The competition, which was originally a qualifier to Atlantic City's "Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America" contest, has changed with the times and the city. The program evolved from a bathing beauty contest into the Miss Philadelphia Scholarship Organization, a local subsidiary of Miss America, the nation’s leading advocate for women’s education and the largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women in the United States.

MPSO provides educational scholarships and opportunities for community service, capacity building and artistic expression for young women ages 17-24. Each year, the Organization awards thousands of dollars in support of its contestants' educational pursuits, and provides a training ground for participants to develop personal and professional communication and leadership skills. Since 2012, MPSO has awarded over $75,000 in scholarships. Miss Philadelphia winners have leveraged the program on their roads to become attorneys, physicians, business executives, professors and media personalities.

Miss Philadelphia is a champion, role model, and spokesperson lending her voice to causes and organizations impacting the Philadelphia community. Once crowned, she spends a year of service in dedication to the city, advocating for her personal platform and that of the MPSO's partners.
