The growth of '''PHS''' over these many years reflects the changes in horticulture itself, from an early focus on specimen plants and ornamental gardens viewed alone in their majestic beauty, to a more holistic understanding of plants as a tool for urban transformation. Since PHS began its highly effective greening programs in the mid-70’s, the impact on communities throughout the region has been dramatic. PHS understands that plants and gardens are linked to the health of people, the environment and the economic vitality of Philadelphia.  Programs like Tree Tenders, Plant One Million, Philadelphia LandCare, Civic Landscapes and City Harvest are changing the conversation [[Category:Issue-Conversation]]on urban decay to a story of hope and transformation, one of renewal and civic pride.

Each year, PHS produces the Philadelphia Flower Show, America’s largest and longest-running horticultural event, which features stunning displays by the world’s premier floral and landscape designers. Started in 1829 by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Show brings together diverse people and organizations to introduce the newest plant varieties, garden and design concepts, and organic and sustainable practices. Proceeds from the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, including donations from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals, support PHS programs and greening initiatives.


Philadelphia is the home to America's first horticultural society, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, founded in 1827, and the world's oldest and largest indoor flower show. The Philadelphia Flower Show was first held in 1829 in an 82-by-69-foot building called Masonic Hall on Chestnut Street. Twenty-five Society members showed off their horticultural treasures, including a variety of exotic and native plants.
PHS invites people of all skill levels to participate year-round in educational workshops and events and, as members, volunteers and exhibitors.  Together with our amazing partners, PHS is shaping the region through greening.


<br>In 1966, the Show was presented in the lower level of the Civic Center and, in 1968, PHS became the official producer. The Flower Show remained in the Civic Center until 1996, when it moved to its current location at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. In this Center City venue, the Show encompasses 33 indoor acres, with exhibit space taking up 10 acres of the main exhibit hall. The Show now entertains more than 265,000 people each year. <br>
